VCNL4040 is a convenient two in one sensor with a proximity sensor with a working range of 2 to 200mm (about 7.5 inches) and a light sensor with a range of 0.0125 to 6553 lux.
In order to make life easier and allow you to focus on your important work, we have installed VCNL4040 along with supporting circuits on a tapping PCB, allowing you to use small miracles with 3.3V (Feather/Rapberry Pi) or 5V (Arduino/Metro328) logic levels. In addition, due to its use of I2C, you can easily connect it with two wires (external power and ground!). We even offer STEMMA OT connectors compatible with SparkFun qwiic for the I2C bus, so you don't even need to solder! Simply connect to your favorite micro and you can use our Circuit Python or Arduino driver to easily interface with VCNL4040 and get close in a short amount of time!
In order to allow you to adjust the measurement values according to your own situation, VCNL4040 allows you to adjust the integration time (measuring the length of light) to set the sensitivity of the measurement based on lighting conditions. The integration time is 80ms, as the sensor only collects measurement values in a short period of time, each measured light point represents a larger amount of light. Therefore, the range of 80ms integration time (lux) is 6553.5 lux.
If you use a longer integration time to obtain the same number of light measurement "events," you will know that there is relatively less light because we wait longer for light to appear and obtain the same number, which means that the occurrence rate of events is lower. Therefore, when the integration time is 640ms, the measured value of VCNL4040 is only 819.2 lux.
It is also worth remembering that as the integration time increases, the sensitivity and resolution within the measurement range also increase.
In addition to adjusting the sensitivity of light measurement, you can also change the current and duty cycle of the IR LED driving proximity detection to adjust the sensitivity of proximity measurement.
