The APDS-9930 provides an I2C interface compatible ambient light sensor (ALS) and a proximity sensor with an infrared LED in a single 8-pin package. The ambient light sensor uses dual light diodes to provide human visual response with low lumen performance under approximately 0.01 lux illumination. The high sensitivity provided enables the device to operate behind dark glass. After full calibration, the proximity sensor can perform 100 mm object detection, eliminating the factory calibration requirements of terminal equipment and sub assemblies. The proximity detection function works well from bright sunlight to dark rooms. The module adds micro optical lens to provide efficient transmission and reception of infrared energy, which can reduce the overall power consumption. In addition, the internal state machine can make the device enter the low power consumption mode, resulting in extremely low average power consumption.

VL6180 is a time-of-flight ranging sensor. The sensor consists of a very small laser source and a matching sensor. VL6180X can detect the "flight time", or the time required for the laser to recover the sensor to calculate the distance.
Unlike most distance sensors that rely on reflected light intensity or reflection angle to determine the distance, VL6180 uses an accurate clock to measure the time required for light to bounce off the surface. Because it uses a very narrow light source, this is different from ultrasonic sonar, and different from traditional infrared distance sensors. Because there is no linearity problem or "dual imaging", you cannot determine the proximity of the object. Therefore, the VL6180X has higher accuracy.
