APDS-9900 provides digital ambient brightness and proximity sensor (ALS), infrared LED and complete proximity detection system in a single 8-pin package. The proximity function can perform 100 mm plug and play detection (without windshield), thus reducing the need for factory calibration of terminal equipment or subassembly. From the bright sunlight to the dark room, the proximity detection function can work well. Wide dynamic range also allows short distance detection operation behind the dark glass of the mobile phone. In addition, the internal state machine has the ability to place the device in a low-power mode between ALS and proximity measurement, providing extremely low average power consumption. ALS can respond to the brightness in extremely low light conditions or behind dark panels
The APDS-9900 digital ambient brightness and proximity sensors are particularly useful for display management in order to extend battery life and provide visibility in different light conditions. Display panel and keyboard backlight account for 30% to 40% of the power of the whole platform. The ALS function is the ideal choice for notebook computers, LCD monitors, flat panel televisions and mobile phones.
The proximity function is particularly suitable for near-field proximity applications. In mobile phones, proximity detection can be carried out when users place their mobile phones near their ears. When using a mobile phone to make a call, the device can provide proximity information at the required high repetition rate fast enough. This feature provides improved "green" power saving capability and adds security to lock the computer in the absence of the user. Adding micro-optical lens in the module can provide efficient transmission and infrared energy reception, which can reduce the overall power consumption.
